Pitch Night

Funding: the numbers, set in context

No single round headlines this week, but the recent record shows the shape of things. The newest WINS LIST issue we could see listed is dated Oct 7, 2026, and it counted $715M reaching 12 women founders, plus 4 new women-led funds. Other weeks looked very different: an August issue tallied about $1.99B in disclosed funding across 20 companies with at least one female founder, while a July issue counted about $555M across 17. One big round can move a week's total, as Antares did with a $470M Series C for nuclear microreactors.

The yearly picture has the same catch. PitchBook data shows companies with at least one female founder took in a record $73.6B in 2025, compared with $44.7B two years before. Still, the number of deals fell for the fourth year running, and Anthropic and Scale AI together raised over $30B, which bends the total upward. The lesson: a record dollar figure and fewer deals can both be true.

24 women entrepreneurs named Impact honorees

The Women Presidents Organization and Women Elevating Women announced 24 honorees for the 2026 Entrepreneurial Women of Impact Awards, backed by J.P. Morgan Commercial Banking. Over 160 people applied, and eight won in each of three revenue categories. The ceremony is today, Oct 21, at Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria, Virginia.

The scoring is the useful part: business performance, leadership and innovation, community impact, and business sustainability. Note the audience too. WPO members run companies with at least $2 million in gross annual sales, or $1 million if they sell services, so this is recognition for established businesses. The lesson: write down your own answers to those four criteria, even if you never apply.

Dr. Diane Ryan named Kennedy Institute CEO

Dr. Diane M. Ryan will become CEO of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute on Oct 27. Interim CEO Joe Hale, who has held the post since December 2025, will shift to Chief Development Officer.

Ryan finished a 29-year Army career as a colonel, and the Army Women's Hall of Fame honored her for work on women's advancement into leadership roles. Her most recent job was eight years as Associate Dean at Tufts' Tisch College of Civic Life. Her path runs through developing people rather than founding a company. The lesson: a long record of growing other people's abilities can be the case for the top job.

Five CPG brands head to Enthuse Pitch Night

Enthuse Foundation picked five finalists for its 8th Annual Pitch Night on November 5 in New York City. The brands are Cartwheel, Cotto, Fermenteria, Noodo and Veggie Vice, selected from over 200 applications. Together they compete for prizes worth more than $100K. The event is for women-owned CPG brands with $100K to $1M in revenue.

Enthuse's own view is that founders at this size have outgrown informal money yet look too young to traditional investors. The foundation also says it has put more than $1M in cash and services into women-owned businesses via its competition and grants; that is its figure, not an independent count. The lesson: if you sit in that gap, look for programs built for it instead of forcing a venture pitch.

Miami: Sunlight AI raises $17.4M

I'm Cara Coley. I created and own this site, and I'm a Miami entrepreneur, so my home city gets a look. Refresh Miami's fundraises and exits page reported Sunlight AI raising $17.4M on October 20, 2026. It also reported Dapta raising $6M on October 13, 2026, just before this week's window.

The source summaries we have do not say whether either company has a woman founder, so we are not claiming that. We include them as local context for Miami builders. The lesson: local trade coverage is a free way to see who is raising near you, and from what range.

The lesson worth keeping

Read the number behind the number. A record year for female-founded funding sat alongside fewer deals, and one week's total depends on a few large rounds. The same habit works for your own career: ask how big, from whom, and what came before. Then use the one tool this week gave us, the awards criteria (performance, leadership, community impact, sustainability), to score your own work in a page of notes. Fortune's editor says venture needs a reset to bring fully female-founded companies outside flashy AI startups back into the game, which is a reason to know your own numbers cold.
